These hand stitched adorably cuddly rusty red panda smudges were recently spotted running amok outside the studio! They’ve gotten loose and won’t come back until adopted by their forever family. They love exploring, sharing Smudge secrets, and sweet corn! All are hand-crafted from felt and fleece, and sport cute button eyes, and hand-stitched ears, tail, nose, and facial features. No two are exactly the same. Now available for adoption!

What is a Smudge, you ask? Simply put, each Smudge is a one-of-a-kind hand made collectible artist toy. These cute whimsical hand sized creatures come in an endless variety of breeds, colors and textures. No two are exactly the same, although sometimes they are born into litters and may share the same tummy/body color selections with their brothers and sisters. Each smudge is created with care and love by me in my studio. I personally hand-select the fabric and thread colors, and cut out unique shapes and designs to bring them to life.

I’m excited to announce that I have been nominated for two of the 2013 Designer Toy Awards sponsored by Clutter Magazine! My Rusty Red Panda Smudges are nominated for the 2013 Best Plush award, and I have been nominated for Break-Through Artist of the year. I want to thank everyone who has made it possible for my smudges to be seen by so many people last year; You Guys ROCK!!! <3 If you have seen these little Red Panda Smudges in person or online, and love them to bits I would gladly appreciate your vote! Designer Con 2012:Mammoths, Zombies, & Skunks, Oh My!

For the first time ever, the Smudges will be invading California! On Saturday November 3rd, 2012, come on out to Designer Con, being held in the Pasadena Convention Center. The doors open at 9 am and the show ends at 6 pm. I will be debuting two new designs: ‘Brea’ a tar covered wooly mammoth Smudge, and the Return of The Living Smudge series. Each are 1st edition runs, and are extremely limited. I am in Booth 404. Come by and say hi!

More About Brea:
At a wee 4 inches tall, these tiny mammoths live on the wild side. As the pictures show, this little lady recently got a bit to close for comfort when visiting the La Brea Tar Pits. She just peeked over the edge and it was going going gone! Good thing she was able to clamber up outta that sticky mess and make her way to Designer Con! These plush/mixed media figures are the 1st edition of the ‘Brea” Smudges and are limited to a mere 6 pieces. Their tummies are made of a pretty vintage floral fabric, of which every spare scrap was used!

The zombie sickness has finally taken foot in the Smudge Community. These itty bitty hand-stitched blood splattered ‘Return of The Living Smudge” plush figures feature a bright pink oozing brain, vintage button eyes, and enough bloody gore to last you until next Halloween! Series 1 is a run of 18 (10 of which will be available to Designer Con attendees!)

The Red Panda Network saves wild red pandas and preserves their habitat through the empowerment of local communities by adaptive community-based research, education, and carbon mitigation.

For example, in eastern Nepal, based on our initial consultations with the local villagers, we created the world’s first community-based monitoring of a red panda population called Project Punde Kundo. In this program we have employed 37 local villagers to monitor their community forests and educate their community forest users about red panda and asked them what they needed in order to preserve their forests. With our other non-profit partners we then support the management and creation of community-based organizations that fulfill these needs. To date we have also supported medicinal plant growing, livestock management and improved breeds and reforestation efforts. Our long-term goal is for community capacity to be reached and community-based organizations to be self-managed without requiring our assistance.

We think that conducting forestry carbon projects are a way of reaching this goal. Through a forestry carbon project, we will turn the forests into an asset that will ensure protection of the whole PIT corridor, or 25% of the Nepalese red panda population, for 20 to 30 years. Thus, we can protect red panda, empower impoverished villagers in eastern Nepal and fight global warming.
In order to conduct our work, 80% of your donations go directly to managing these activities and support our conservation efforts around the world. The other 20% has been used to support our administrative costs in the United States and Nepal. We thank you for your support in enabling us to make a difference for red panda and local communities.

Stinky Skunk Smudge

Meet the newest member of the animal Smudges: Stinky Skunk Smudge! Measuring in at about 6 1/2″ tall, this little bugger is quite a bit taller than the classic smudge! He’ll be stinking up my store in about a week, so be on the look out for him.

Mutant Fish Plushie Invades The Midwest!

Hide your children hide your wives! Weird mutant fish plushies have invaded the Midwest. I was lucky enough to catch this one before they dispersed into the cornfields. Surprisingly he was very peaceful.

He was originally found grazing in this field of grass before he agreed to come home with us.

Then he insisted on trying to swim in the dog’s kiddie pool, even though there was no water in it. Good thing he has all of those spindly little legs to get around with!

He agreeably sat for one more photo with Hatch before scampering off into the woods. I hope he finds more of his kind to frolic around with! We will miss you mutant fish plushie!

Mutant Fish Plushie is based off of this quick creature sketch I drew in my mini 3′ sketchbook. Final plush is fabricated out of fleece and embroidery thread, and lovingly stuffed with fabric scraps and polyfil. More of his kind will be available in my shop later this year.

What is a Smudge?
Smudges are itty bitty artistic muses that like to hang out wherever people are. Smudges survive solely on minuscule morsels of pocket lint and cobwebs. Since Smudges are docile creatures, they get along very well in the human world. Next time it feels like there is a little being in the room, take a look under the throw pillows, behind the computer, and those old shoes in the corner. Surely enough, a Smudge will be there!

Silver Surfer Smudge for Actor Doug Jones

This one-of-a-kind shiny Silver Surfer Smudge is a one of made specially for well known actor Doug Jones. He was in town recently for the Chicago Wizard Convention, and since my husband was meeting up with Mr. Jones after the show, we decided to surprise him with this little guy!

Some of Doug’s most well known roles include the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic 4 movie, Fauno in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labrynth, and Abe Sapien in the Hell Boy movies. I had a great time working on this Smudge, and am happy to say that Doug will give him a great home!

Meet Mr. Lincoln Smudge! As the name implies, this long nosed big hatted fellow shares many similarities with America’s 16th President. He doe not however, hunt vampires. If a scary monster is afoot, this little guy goes into hiding!

Pretty Gilded Menswear Smudge. These glas, like their male counterparts, are created using menswear styled fabric. Their pretty pearly eyes are from my vintage antique button collection. No two are exactly alike.

Mohawk Rocker Smudge loves to P.A.R.T.Y! Don’t let this guy’s cute innocent demeanor fool you, Mohawk Rocker Smudge is hip on the music scene, and stays up late every night partying like it’s 1999.
